What kinds of music do you listen to?

Just to keep the community active and to hopefully share tastes in music to open up worlds of genres to other people, I would like to ask the LBF community what kinds of music do you listen to, and how much does the music you listen to affect the tunes that you produce? Before I begin to answer my own question, I would like to ask each and everyone of you not to give anyone any flak for liking a different genre of music than your own. Now for my own taste in music, I prefer to listen to a lot of metal and metal sub-genres like symphonic metal and industrial metal. The bands that I listen to the most often in this order are as follows: Sybreed, Disturbed, System of a Down, Animals as Leaders, Persefone, Dark Tranquility, Otep, Korn, Slipknot, Gemini Syndrome, Blood Stain Child and Device. I also am a fan of Tech N9ne as he is the only rapper besides eminem I am willing to listen to. The bands I do listen to do affect the way I compose music, but mainly only in song structure. Alot of my music has a very Disturbed/System of a Down-esque song structure because it is what I feel most comfortable with.

Here are just a few links to some of the music I enjoy the most:

Animals as Leaders - http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=ukAJy_ivSXU

Sybreed - http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=lHFqg5KsANo

and Otep - http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=aadHFrNUydM

if you too decide to post links of your own, please try to not post anything other than music or give away misleading links.Thank you for sharing!

I don't know what I expected to happen after I posted this. But nothing happening was what I least expected.

there is but.. I would say that this one is a bit different.

personally, I don't have a specific genre that I listen to. I honestly don't like most of what I hear but I like music from almost any style. however, I gravitate towards classic rock (bands like Led Zeppelin and whatnot). but I do have one exception.. I just can't bring myself to like "Country" music. I hear very little for creativity in that genre. but this is just my personal opinion on that.

I'm really weird when it comes to listening to music. The norm is you have a favourite "band" and love lyrics. I don't have a favourite band, and I'm not interested in the words. I listen to instrumentals and soundtracks, my favourites being the Ratchet & Clank OST.

I'm grown up in the 1960/70ies, and I still love music of that time, Beatles, Kinks, Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Supertramp, Yes,..., but I also love nearly all other kind of music. When I'm composing my own music, I'm sitting on my piano playing with some chords and notes til I get an idea. Its neither sounding like a Kinks song or a Led Zeppelin song, its a CuriousSack song. Once I've composed a song and noticed afterwards that unconsciously I've worked an old jazz song into it. But I'm not orientated towards any special genre.

Many greetings, Jürgen^^

I also don't have any favorite genres. But I mostly listen to EDM, ANYstep (because there are so many , dubstep, chillstep etc.) About techno I listen to it less. But I horribly hate disco-polo (if you know what it is, it just as the genre name says - mainly played on a parties.

But I also like to listen to 70s-90s Mainly Rock or metal such as Guns'n'roses, Mettalica and many others

lyrics and vocals are secondary as long as the vocals aren't somewhat appealing to my ears or i can easily ignore it depending on how easy it is to ignore, system of a down got me into playing guitar, scrillex got me into EDM, i like many different things i don't like much pop but if there's enough musical depth in it (soundscape and the way it progresses in chords and structure as well as insane catchy but non cheesy melodies), most of genres i like: japanese folk, european folk, middle eastern folk, death metal, deathcore, metalcore, thrash metal, nu metal, alternative metal, melodic death metal, groove metal, industrial metal, dubstep, drumstep, DnB, jazz (hard bop and bebop mostly), trance, blues, orchestral, liquid EDM, hard dance, funk, electro, psytrance, glitch hop, instrumental rock, melodic metalcore, reggae dub, reggae, electro house (i hate most electro house) and more...

I only listen to rap/hiphop mainly because that's what I've grown up listening to. I do like songs in other genres but rap is mostly what I like and it's all types of rap not just Eminem, my spotify playlist has 570 songs from that genre alone and I got another 139 songs downloaded on my phone because spotify doesn't happen to have those songs. Plus my uncle is a rapper so yeah.

May kind of music is instrumental. I just love the stuff!

More specifically, The Halo soundtrack. To me, it's the most beautiful sound ever invented......

I really like electronic music, especially things akin to witch pop. Bands like Purity Ring, Porter Robinson, Passion Pit (thanks to LBP ), and The Neighborhood. But I'm a fan of all sorts of things. Punk rock is another favorite of mine, as well as classical and jazz (dat Gershwin tho), and the occasional rnb (Dessa !!!). I work at a college radio station, so I hear a good variety of music.

The kind of music I like is kiiinda like indy/alternative rock stuff like Imagine Dragons and Fall Out Boy (at least their newer albums). Although I'm definitely a big fan of some soundtracks like Doctor Who and most recently Splatoon. Pop music isn't always my thing but I've found myself liking P!nk and Taylor Swift quite a bit. I'd say I have a pretty big taste in genres for listening to.

My life is Cars by Gary Numan. I despise every other compositional work in existence

On a serious note, I love me some electronica, especially chillout, vaporware, future bass, breaks, dnb, and of course ambience. Ark Patrol, Tycho, KOAN Sound, Mr.Fijiwiji, Tenru, Slow Magic, Royksopp, Flume, ODESZA, Pensees, Galimatias, Bustre... the list goes on for pages, and I love these guys and gals to death. However, i was raised on Incubus, Franz Ferdinand, Death Cab for Cutie, Tegan and Sara, Pink Floyd, Jason Mraz, Guster, and so forth. If you haven't already, check em out.

These days, i find myself eating Tillamook and pulling out Revolver, spinning in my desk chair while Eleanor Rigby sputters from my turntable.

The proper terminology is "Futur Buss" bb. Though admittedly, as much as I love electronic music, it's genre names can become pretty laughable at times.

-Brostep
-Tropical House
-Thump Wave

That last one may or may not exist.

subgenres will always seem funny to me lol.

Future Bass is essentially Trap with some funkier chords lol. not knocking the genre though. I've heard a couple cool "Future Bass" tracks

While there's definitely quite a few trap-esque future bass tracks, I would't be so quick to call the entire genre a funky knockoff. There's definetly much more unique FB songs out there with no relation to trap whatsoever, i.e Kaleidoscope by Kasbo, Hold Fast by San Holo, On My Face Point Point , etc.

someone needs to do a bluesy future bass.

I've admittedly been into hipster music lately. what is hipster music? hard to define but the band members usually wear things like vests and they play instruments that barely anyone plays anymore. and they sing these very new-aged lyrics that sort of make me want to jump off a bridge.

my least favorite genre, eh?... all this country/pop music i'm hearing lately. and I've even heard a few songs that had almost a hip-hop vibe to them, but they had some country music guy singing...

there's a genre name for Country/Rap. it's called Crap
