Hi everybody I'm a music researcher and musician doing a PhD about musical practices and learning in video games and game culture. Studying LBP music and musicians then was an obvious choice of case, and now I am entering this forum hoping that some of you might want to participate in my research and help me finding answers to my questions. Basically I'm interested in finding out how come you good people make music in LBP? and, how and what kind of music do you make?

If anyone of you happen to be interested in being part of this, please let me know here or send me a private message.

Yes, welcome! This is the place to be if you're looking for some LBP music creators.

So.. yes. This seems very interesting to me. I may need some more details but I think I would be interested in helping.

Nice! What do you want to know? I will be happy to answer any questions :-)

In short: I am a researcher from the Sibelius Academy, Helsinki, Finland. I have earlier played the LBP 1 and 2, now moving on to 3. Will also try to make some music here during my research :-D

For anyone participating it would mean us talking together, either here, via private message, email, or Skype (what ever format you prefer) about your experience with music and video games in general, and LPB in special. I am also curious about in what ways this community is important for you - and how it works.

And, Of course I am interested in hearing your music!

Hmmm... suspicious o.o
Oh well!
I like making music that isn't like trance. It's more comical and has based-off instruments from the Rayman and Spyro games for PS1 and PS2!
But you won't find them on my Earth ATM. They're unreleased currently and is only used for my own purposes ATM. However just send an invite if you'd like a hear!

I might have to go to the shops and get a new headset, unless if I couldn't, I'd have to do that next week... Hmm...
I'm gonna see if I can make a fitting zombie-apocalypse/abandoned song for my upcoming WIP. I'll have to make a thread about it!

Yeah, I'd rather wait for the finished thing, but it'll be used in my level I'm making and is currently unreleased and will not be heard until this level is done.

Choosing the lbp community to do your research, hmm? Well, I can give you a little background information about it if that would help you achieve your research goals. The lbp music community has been under constant change (up untill these past few months, its been kinda stale) ever since it basically formed itself back in 2011. Alot of people come and go and the majority of the best musicians this game has seen have left and moved on to better things. Some people such as Lil_morta7 have had success in the real world producing music on a program. Alot of folk would talk and aspire to become real world musicians and some have seen it through, but alot end up just giving up because of complications with software and financial setbacks ad things of that nature. The community is probably the worst it has ever been after the release of LBP3, which was a serious letdown for alot of folks including myself. Id ay that roughy 20% or so of the original community from 2013 still remains active today. If you want to see the best this game has to offer, I would highly suggest you check out: Velvet_audio (?), Nerd_dog38, Breezy-the-pro (?), nk087, BuddyDestruction, Meansr, Supersonicpsiii, and Trilexx. Those are the best ones I can think of off of the top of my head. Thank you for reading and good luck with your research!

You forgot MasterBlastya!
Also, it's "nerd_dog38", not "nerd-dog38"
Really unfortunate how the top-notch musicians AND creators have left, leaves the new generation to do it! Which I strive to do atm!

Thank you, corrupt and sana_88! This helps! Can I ask why you think the lbp3 was a letdown? I have only played 1 and 2 so far (starting on 3 when I get home to my PS in a week), and I absolutely love both of them! And, sana_88, I will have to wait for the finished work then :-)

LBP3 isn't too much of a letdown, it's just that at release there were many bugs, still are, but not as many.
If you look at all the pros and cons, it is about even, seeing that my sackboy sometimes breaks and I can't do anything (can move my head, but can't open popit or walk/jump etc.)
As well as the fact it freezes quite a bit and usually game-diverges in multiplayer. There aren't as many problems, but I find the LBP3 shop to be disgraceful. They added all this stuff, but so much DLC isn't shown in the shop, also it takes a while to load sometimes and really, LBP2's shop was almost instant to load and still contained all the DLC for LBP and LBP2.

I'd say that the music thermo is kinda 'bad' on LBP3 compared to LBP2. I put down one instrument and it takes up more than a quarter, like what is the deal with that? Once the thermo fills you cannot play the music which is annoying. I made a test song in LBP3 and it obviously filled the blue thermo so it would break, I made the EXACT same dong on LBP2 and guess what, it was almost full but working!

So yeah, it wasn't a letdown, but definitely could have been a bit better.

@starbandit, in my own opinion, there are alot of reasons why lbp was a huge letdown. But as a music creator for 2 and a half years before the release, and one of the only predominant rock/metal creators on the game, it was a huge letdown when I saw the very short list of instruments they have added to lbp3. It has always been a request from the majority of music creators for a new set of guitars to be added into the game and the folks over at sumo didn't deliver which was really disapointing. Aside from lack of new instruments, multiplayer is as close to broken as you can get without it not being functional at all. The new interface in the game is very uncomfortable to work and it is very laggy for many. Aside from the majority of its flaws, if it were played only for its story, it would be a pretty good game. Me personally, I don't see myself creating much in the future and might end up ceasing to compose on lbp ever again if it remains in this state. But thats just my opinion on the matter, thank you for reading

Maybe it will pick up after a while? getting rid of the bugs i mean? After all it is still kind of new and also new people working on it... @Corrupt, but if you are a rock/metal creator I totally understand your need for more guitars Would you continue making music in LBP3 if Sumo upgraded the sequencer?

Did any one of you tell the developers in advance what you wanted from the 3rd game? or did they ask the forum members?
Well, I guess I have to both play the story and make some music on the sequencer too in order to fully understand. Too bad about multiplayer though...

By the way, I like your music curator system in here! Very much

the had a beta for it and supposedly the beta was less buggy, i'm not very good at structuring songs and sometimes can't decide what songs i want to make, but i make really good riffs (at least riffs that i love) which have come from listening to tonnes of music, so that is a tip for making music "listening to tonnes of music" (as much as you can handle) does that help?

@Starbandit, most likely, yes I would continue my work on lbp if it had more instruments and features as a whole. And I do expect them to make improvements to the game over time, but I think that by the time its up and running I will be creating music in the real world. Hopefully. Its going to take several thousands of dollars for me to get all the right equipment for the set up I want to have in the future, so its going to be a very long time before im at my true starting point.

@Warman7785: Yes, that helps! and listening a lot to music is a good advice do you always make music in lbp or in the real world too?
@Corrupt: Yeah. Music tech gear can be quite expensive... :/ When you say you want to make music in the real world, are you thinking of making more music for games or make music in general?

@Starbandit, music in general. I don't necessary plan on limiting myself to either little sound bites or full on production style music. I plan on doing whatever I feel like at that very point in time, like I do as of right now.
