Creating a level - How much Time do you need?

Hey Sackfolk!
I was just wondering how long it takes you to create a new level. How many days do you need and how many hours do you play normally per day? It just took me always sooooo long to create a level as if was so lazy that I wondered how long you need. I usually needed about 3-4 Months for a normal level, some of my level took me over a year. And these levels are not that kind of levels which need so long ^^ ![]() I am very curious about your experiences! BTW here is my cross-controller level https://lbp.me/v/knn3pv/topreviews?p=1&l=12 |

That completely depends on the type of level. If it's just a basic platformer with the emphasis being on gameplay instead of complex logic and whatnot, I'll probably finish it in a month or so. I never rush levels, though, and I personally don't believe anything of high quality can be created in less than a month without issues. A large part of my creation process isn't just making the level functional, but adding polish to ensure everything runs as smoothly and optimally as possible. I fine-tune every little aspect to make the level flow and avoid any sort of hindrances to the player.
If I'm making a more logic-heavy level like a crazy boss-battle or an elaborate open world, I tend to take several months to ensure everything is working properly. It really all depends on the type of level being made. |

It takes 6-10 months for a Battle with Zombies level. Other levels need more time.

For me creating a small game with not so deep story or anything too complex takes about a week if Im excited creating it. If I have enough motivation to create it I create it for about 6-8 hours a day. Testing and fixing bugs takes a lot of time because my levels are usually mostly logic

You guys are fast! Well, I play like 2-5h per day. More, if I really like my project. And how I even said, it takes months for my Battle with Zombies levels. There are so many features and logic objects. It takes long. And a platformer with a story takes even more. It's about the small details. The design is really important for me.

The actual creating process doesn't take very long. And that is generally between 2-3 months. But the planning, sketching and brainstorming sometimes takes more time than the level. My longest project was a multi-ending level which took three years to complete. Yes, it's kinda absurd but it was a worthwhile experience. A level that I'm currently making has been in the planning stage for more than two years but I only began creating it couple of months ago. Knowing what to do actually pays off in the long run, especially when you get stuck. The time taken for creating a serious project normally extends way beyond the patience of an average player.

That sounds interesting. I also have plans on levels. I posted some ideas ages ago in different forums.

Currently I'm building a minigame and it has a lot of logic. It will probably be finished in a few weeks. For LBF Picks, it is all about how complex the level is. I've never built a real platformer (would take too much time). I prefer to create minigames. All in all, I usually need several weeks to months.

Yeah. On LBP Vita I am making a platformer. Not a classic one. It has a story. It's the detective project. I have posted it here.

My last LBP2 project.. I've been working more than two years on it...and then my PS3 had a crash...and then I got me my PS4 and lbp3...and then I started a new project and I'm already working for more than a year on it, but this time it will get finished, under condition that my PS4 doesn't break and a lbp4 won't be published before its done!
![]() I would consider me to be the snail among the creators! ![]() |

I used to spend about 5-6 hours per day creating in LBP. How much time it took me to create a on level though is difficult to explain, because either I had too little of free time or small interest in the project.
Very challenging to make levels (by the time I was creating them) took me 5 months to create (such as Tic Tac Toe level) Much simpler levels took me 1-3 month average to create (Slender remake for example or.. 2048) |

As much time as you need, and it depends on the type of level.

Can't deny that, but.. Your task is to tell how much YOUR time it takes to create one level not just in general for everyone. |

I'm not sure if it's just me but it usually takes me about 2-3 days to make a level (depending on what I make). I mostly rock it with logic and the level subjects aren't consistent as I like to make whatever I feel like. The looks of my levels seem bland but still looks nice without details to make it look crowded and there's no gross intersecting messy blocks. If I'm making a big level then it usually takes about two weeks. most of the time is spent perfecting the logic to my liking, and levels may take longer than expected to fix glitches that are in the level, though unfortunately there are some glitches I cannot fix. I play WAAAAY to much, I start playing at 9:00 am and stop at 1:00 or 2:00 in the morning on the weekends.
Anyways, that's how long it usually takes for me to make a level and how long I play. |

My playtime varies IMMENSELY, so I can't answer that with certainty. To take some examples for the other question, the Halloween platformer I recently made in LBP1 took roughly four hours to build. More complex levels that I try to make the best possible, like my Trouble in the Cloud World series, generally take 2-3 weeks to complete, and that's only IF I can be on to work on it as much as I want to be. Otherwise, I've been known to take 3 months to finish one level.

Finishing a level? Whats that?
![]() I need a couple of months to make a level like Battle with Zombies. My upcoming adventure 'Too Late' will need many more months to be a adventure with a deep enough story and good characters. I think I've been working on Too Late for quite some time now. |

About 6 months to year.
I'm just very slow creator that creates whenever I have the time! |

Thats a good break if you make very remarkable levels.
I am a perfectionist. I'm like 'No I dont like this tiny detail in my level. Better start from scratch!' It's kind of wrong, but it's kind of right. I wouldn't publish a level I wasn't satisfied with. So I end up publishing intro levels and minigames. But I'm optimistic with Too Late. It might be published in... 100 years. ![]() |

It seems you're very skilled and experienced at making platformers. 10 hours is less, even for a platformer. But I liked what I saw and played.
I never really finished a big story platformer, but I'd say it takes about 6 months, if you know what you want in the level and if the story is written. My TopDown shooter takes about 3 months. It could take less, but I want to avoid bugs in the logic. After all this is a really interesting topic to talk about. |

My levels are short challenge like levels. They're simple and rely a lot on skill and precision. It takes 2-4 hours to build a level, although lhe longest I've worked on a level is 3 days.
