Hack n Slash/Beat em Up Combo System

After playing around with Sticker Panel, I got carried away & made a few attack and special effect sprite animations (a lot like those seen in the Megaman Zero games). Long story short, I'm trying to create a combo system using controllinators, selectors, sequencers, emitters & such. The sort of thing where one can press square, square, square to activate said attack & fx sprites in sequential order. But I'm kinda stumped on the project as attacks keep overlapping. Any suggestions sack folk?

Here is what I think:


Square square square: counter set on 3, reset if 3 or if not square.

Another example for you not to ask this:
Square cross triangle: 3 counters, each one 1.
Square activates the 1st one. Then if the 1st one is done, and if cross, then it activates the 2nd counter. Same way for the 3rd counter. Then reset all the counters if wrong symbol, or if 3rd counter activated.
