It used to be that programs were prepared in this way, visually, with pencil and paper using a template like this:

The resulting chart would read similar to how a Scratch program does. It would then be translated into machine instructions and entered on punch cards, ready to be fed into the punch card reader of the computer. If the program was trivial or short (like a boot loader), it would be entered manually using the front panel switches of the machine instead.

Later, in the early 60s, when people first started hooking up visual displays to computers people experimented with light pens and some anticipated being able to 'draw' programs and manipulate data visually. Pretty interesting stuff. Even with tablets today however we still struggle to use our hands as anything more than a substitute for a mouse.

Nowadays, after a generation or two of people who have been taught to believe programming is editing text files, these ideas are often derided and made fun of as being childish. I think it's important that programmers keep an open mind about visual programming, since a lot of people immediately discard it.

I do a good bit of programming for my engineering computations course and I have to say, even with it being nonvisual, typical programming as most is today, having a pretty strong background in LBP logic has greatly helped me out and given me a major edge over everyone else in the class.
