I don't really know the basics of a platformer I mean I see people on the community making these amazing platforming levels with their own backgrounds but I want to make a good platformer and I need help figuring out the elements of the platformer and what to make in it. Please help

Oay. Here are some elements: platforms; now I don't mean just normal wood cardboard platforms, something bright and colourful

Background; something that suits your theme.

Optional things; all the new stuff like ladders, slides ,velociporters, custom powerups, blink ball, layer launchers and the new characters.

As well as those try make them visually appealing.

Well I hope I helped.

Okay, I'm maybe not top at making them, but I know what I want to see, what means: Make somethings thats new. Doesnt matter how it looks. Less is more. You just need to have fun.

This would be an example of a very basic platformer.

Platforms and gaps. That's the basic of it.

Thank you for showing me your level. It looks great! But I'm kinda thinking on a little more of a simple kind of platformer. I had an idea in mind similar to the rainbow world (demo) level. I tried making a level yesterday but I did not accomplish much and I am wondering if I should add detail last and start with simple stuff

Hi cj,

in lbp2 there has been a level contest called "The Ugly Level Contest". The duty has been to create a platformer out of a level template. If you have no experiemce with creating platformers then maybe this can give you some inspiration of how to start building such a level! So if you own lbp2 too, then it could be worthwhile to have a look on this.

lbp2 ugly level project template

The template is copyable so that you can juggle with its elements a bit! There are also lots of contest entries, where you can see what people have done out of these templates!
It should be easy to transfer such inspirations to lbp3.

Many greetings, Jürgen^^

You should try combining all characters in the level, to add variety.

You could also add the different items for sackboy to add even more variety.

Just try not to make something that just consists on jumping.

Have you considered using modular level design? It's very easy to create and is neat, easy for players who are new to creating platformers, and if you decide you wish to edit some parts, it should be easy as pie (mm.. Pie!) (Also, use a grid, preferably medium since it isn't too big nor small, so that your shapes will be neater and easier to edit )

Here's a tutorial by CompherMC (Or his Youtube Account LBPlanetorials) that tops off the basic information on how you can get started

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1J4TX1mNY7M

Personally I use a more complex version of modular, it's more like a mix of different techniques so yeah.
If you wish to start on design, I'd recommend using sticker panel (with opacity set to 0) or hologram (Brightness set to 0) that has decorations on it. It is a lot easier to use and can easily be moved around.
LBPlanetorials has a ton of well-explained tutorials for LBP2 (That can easily be used in LBP3) that are greatly effective, but easy to do

You can consult to a fellow creator, ahem *points at myself* who has experience in creating platformers, so that they can give tips and help you make your Team-Pickable level! You can actually ask me though (I'm on PS3 btw...)

Try using all the new features of LBP3, such as velociporters, the added 13 layers, hook hat, boost bots and more importantly, the 3 new heroes of Bunkum! (I miss craftworld...) I mean yay!

Try adding challenges, so that the players don't get bored, and you probably shouldn't use the old sponge attached with a bolt trick, since players want to see the new LBP Platforming experience! Such as use of velociporter physics! Climbable material moving thoughout layers you perhaps the hook rail with danger ahead so that players will have to move up and down!

You can also use layer launchers to make transition even more fluent! Also don't leave players cluelessly stuck, trust me, they absolutely hate it when the path is no where near knowable.
Add secret areas, challenges and prizes to intrigue the average and extraordinary sackfolk!

I hope this helped you! Have a happy Easter!

Here's the thing, It took me a year to actually get good at creating. All I have to suggest is to expirement, if you have LBP2 then you should do the tutorials (because LBP3 doesn't have any on LBP2 tools). Try making some levels, see what works and what doesn't.

I can't really explain how the process goes though, so it's hard to explain. It just sort of happens.

I only wish to help mainly since when I first got started about just over 2 years ago I believe, I was given barely any help. But as I played though, and started learning, now I can actually create a project that I'm doing that I think is absolutely awesome!

If your having trouble trying to get the basic idea down of what a platformer is, try playing some of the classics over again like Mario and Sonic. A lot of good advice here too

I forgot one thing! Learn all your logic first, this way, when you play a level, you can visualise what has been done, for e.g. the logic.
Then play a tonne of great levels, this way you'll have a general idea of what most experts do
