PS3 version has downgraded graphics!

I've posted this before on LBPC where it got removed, so i rewrote it on Sackinima a few minutes ago and i thought i'd share it here too. I've discovered something:

http://i3.lbp.me/img/ft/fa3d22b2fb4d0ab5c56ee11119ff8a0eb93bc4e3.jpg

PS4 is not necessarily prettier than PS3, it's more like PS3 is being uglier than PS4.

This is a picture i took in No Drain, No Gain. I used the glitch where you can explore story mode levels in create mode. This is the logic from one of the buttons that is used to drain the water.

As you can see, there are two water tweakers, an AND gate from a peculiar bit of logic and it's not gate, and from the button itself. This peculiar bit of logic is a Platform Sensor, a developer tool used to sense what console the player is playing on - PS3 or PS4. This sensor here is set to detect players playing on a PS4, due to being paused it's currently on (even though i use PS3, but as i said i was in pause mode). Basically this setup outputs something different on each console. But why?

Well, the Water Tweakers are set differently for each console. On PS3, Sumo has disabled Light Patterns - a graphical feature which adds some neat-looking shadows to the water. This feature doesn't do anything performance-wise, it didn't actually lag on PS3 when i enabled it, it only makes the game look better. This feature IS enabled on PS4! Doesn't this seem a bit fishy?

Clear evidence that they are trying to make the game look better on the PlayStation 4 by making it look less on the PlayStation 3. Shame on you, Sumo.

If PS3 is uglier than PS4, then by applying that logic we can state that the PS4 version is prettier than the PS3...

That is suspicious. Let us know if you find any more instances of deliberate downgrades like this.

Well, the PS4 is more powerfull than the PS3, so it is obvious that the PS4 is more prettier and sharper (PS4-1080p PS3-720p). It's like comparing a upright piano built in 1914 and a Steinway Grand piano built this year; it is obvious that the Steinway will have more clearer and more beautiful sound than the upright.

But you're right, it seems fishy that you can enable these feutures on PS3, but I think they must attract people to PS4 too, don't you think so?

Hmmm this is a rather interesting find Woutery. Shame that LBPC deleted it. Even though we don't know for sure, I already knew Sumo kept us the platform sensor from us as well as other stuff, but what really astonishes me is what you say that the PS3 can display the same settings just as fine! :/

This does not surprise me at all. They originally started developing LBP3 before PS4 was announced. The PS4 version obviously looks better than the PS3 version due to the capabilities and high resolution. But by going the extra step to make sure that the PS4 version looks better, they can make it look more appealing than the PS3 version.

Another thing I hear is that connecting with players is a lot better on PS4. I've personally been suspicious since day one that they may have downgraded this on PS3 purposely. I really, really don't want to believe this but this find raises some suspicion... I'm not going to jump to conclusions about network issues. Hopefully Sumo Digital has more integrity than that.

Well, i'm just going to state here that i did not fully test this. That would mean i'd have to change the logic for every button in the level. What i did was turn on the light patterns on one tweaker, then flooded the level, and checked if there was any lag. There was nothing. I should probably try and do a big test in the future where i would have to actually change all the logic. I can only confirm that it's highly suspicious like everyone said...

I've also changed the title to a more relevant title.

@Jelly

The sensor is available here.

Also Woutery, are you able to save to platform-detect logic piece?

EDIT:
Nevermind, I was blind

I foresee a patch that disables these logic pieces in the future.

I hope not, I just want to use it in a menu system. But I guess because the actual name of the filter sensor that goes along with the platform sensor is "DEV ONLY! Filter Sensor" they might patch it

I hope they just leave it alone like the 3-D glitch in lbp2, it's a helpful tool that doesn't risk breaking the game, so why get rid of it?

yea. I honestly hope that they just let that one slide. when they named it " DEV ONLY! Filter Sensor ", they probably weren't expecting people to get a hold of it.

one use for it would be to do what Sumo did and downgrade levels for ps3.. not to be rude or make ps4 levels look better, but to improve performance. the ps3 is more likely to lag when there is more for it to process.

i'll be creating on ps3 for a while. so if I start to make things lag from the amount of effects or something, I can just make it so that the detail isn't as much when you play from a ps3. useful? I think so

. people can do that if they want. it may throw their play/yay ratio off a bit though

or something I would do: " No rich kids allowed. PS3 only level!!! "

Yep. It kinda reminds me of people who have awesome levels that can be played solo but they don't let you play unless you have 2 people or more. There was a top-down tank level I really wanted to play recently that was like that :<

Anyway, I hope they don't patch it 'cause I'm sure most people will use it for the lols With Utmost Responsibility.

You're a genius aren't you?

Are you saying that a 10 yr old system has worse graphics than a brand new, next gen system? SHOCKING!

Are you for real? Wow, just wow.

If you want next Gen graphics, get a next gen system. Duh.

Its like someone driving a Model T, Complaining that someone with a 2014 Ferrari has a faster car.

People like you just make me laugh.

I'd be happy if my PS3 was a Model T. I'd have a piece of history.

But lets say that the Ferrari has the same engine as the Model T, but the makers of the car removed certain bits from the Model T engine and it doesn't run as fast. What would you think?

Because that's what going on. Sumo has basically removed graphical features from the PS3 version to make the PS4 version appear prettier.

The reason probaly is that they have the game more appealing on PS4, so that the PS4 gets some love too. Or else, everybody would be buying it for the PS3.

maybe just maybe, they did this for stability. could be that ps3 version just about handles it ok (as you said), but once there's more activity on screen the framerate will take a hit or will be frame ripping issues...

This is nonsense. There is no need to downgrade anything to make the PS4 version look better. It WILL look better no matter what, it is a far more powerful system. Please use some logic here. The real reason is more likely a compromise to keep the frame rate steady. Since there are so many improvemnets and new features on other fields, some corners might have had to be cut in order to make it run well on the PS3.
